Uzbek Collective

Uzbekistan has the advantages of a warm climate, a long growing season, and plentiful sources of water for irrigation. Until 1990, agriculture in Uzbekistan, as in all other Soviet republics, was organized in a dual system. Large-scale collective and state farms coexisted in a symbiotic relationship with quasi-private individual farming on subsidiary household plots.

Greg English photographed in 1990 when Uzbekistan's farmers were producing the largest volume of fruits and vegetables among the nations of what was soon to become the former Soviet Union.
